JourneyWoman: Plan Your Solo Travels With our Directory

Dear Reader,

It's hard to believe, but September 2023 is the 29th anniversary of JourneyWoman! Started by Evelyn Hannon in 1994 as a print newsletter with solo travel tips for women, and expanding online in 1997, JourneyWoman is the first website in the world for solo women travellers. Since taking over JourneyWoman four years ago, I've been honoured to sustain Evelyn's vision of helping women travel solo safely, thanks to the support of JourneyWoman readers like you around the world.

We have lots to celebrate, so we are starting now with an important expansion of our Women's Travel Directory for solo women travellers. We know that travel has become more expensive for all of us - so this is our way to help you find safe, budget-friendly alternatives to travel.

Our Women's Travel Directory is a free service to help you plan your travels while supporting female entrepreneurs, and small, women-friendly businesses in the travel industry. This is the largest Directory for Women in the world, with over 100 diverse, women-friendly businesses, all of which have gone through a rigorous review process to be included. Those marked "JourneyWoman Verified" have achieved a higher standard, which includes positive reviews from travellers. Many of these companies have been part of the JourneyWoman community for decades and know what women want.

In addition to women-friendly tours, we also feature Wellness Retreats, which include transformational retreats, and those focused on helping women improve their mental and physical well-being, and Small Ships, which feature sustainable small ships, river cruises and cultural expeditions, many of which have no single supplement. You might have seen our recent announcement with Swan Hellenic, which is offering no single supplement on selected fall cruises.

In addition to curating the businesses we think are most appealing to solo travellers, we've invited all the companies to include tours, retreats and cruises offered by the company, along with price ranges, women-only or mixed groups, single or double occupancy rates, group size and whether partner matching is available. Many of these companies offer special discounts just for JourneyWoman readers so make sure you're checking our Deals page and emails (they might be in your junk folder!)

Today's news: Our New Accommodations Section

Finding a safe place to stay is often the top question women ask when planning solo travel. In fact, in our last survey, 76% of women said a safe, affordable place to stay is the #1 need. Since this kind of resource doesn't exist anywhere else, we built it from scratch, just for you.

Our brand-new Accommodations section includes hostels, monasteries, boutique hotels, housesitting and homestays recommended by women, in addition to hospitality services like Women Welcoming Women Worldwide (5W), Friendship Force, and Servas. Because we think it's important to support women, you can also search for women-owned accommodations. We're grateful to our founding sponsors, including AccessibleGO, Le Monastère des Augustines, Wheel the World, Trusted Housesitters, Las Casacadas Lodge and the Lodge at Pine Cove. Please support these small businesses when you travel!

Please help us build this resource by recommending just ONE place you've stayed here. It only takes a few minutes to fill out our form. Make sure you have a photo and a link to the accommodation website ready. (If you don't have a photo, don't worry, we'll find one!)

Thank you to the women who have been helping us test this service by sharing their recommendations! Please note you cannot submit your own business or one you have a financial interest in, and it must be listed on an existing platform to provide more detailed information, including accessibility. Be sure to read our rules and terms of use. This is not a booking platform, so you will need to book any accommodations using the links provided.

For those who want to search for an accommodation, you can read personal reviews submitted by women and sort by price (starting under $50), type of accommodation, city, country and ownership. We encourage everyone to support a women-owned business when you travel!

Please spend some time on the Directory and let us know what you think! If you'd like to be included in our Directory as a partner, you can complete our verification form here. We welcome your feedback and ideas — this is all for you!

With gratitude,

Carolyn Ray, CEO + Editor, JourneyWoman, editor@journeywoman.com
